    The first book I can remember reading all on my own was a collection of fairytales. Not the usual ones; this was an old edition, probably from the early 1900s, of the darker versions of the stories. It had gorgeous Art Nouveau illustrations and it was a hand-me-down from my grandmother. I barely understood most of the stories, but I read it over and over again. After that, I wanted to read more.
